Poems

I don’t set out to write poems. Most of the time, I’m just trying to understand something. But once in a while, language shifts — prose tightens, rhythm takes over, and a poem appears. When that happens, I let it be what it is. These are the result of such moments.

Earthly Dreams (1999)

What earthly dream can we behold,
That Heaven cannot render?
Yet Heaven’s best is stored for us,
If we behold its Sender.

What lowly prize of gold, bejewelled,
Would cause our hearts to treasure?
When in heaven awaits, a crown resplendent,
Of worth beyond all measure.

What mortal rose would we desire?
While heaven holds in splendour,
Endless fields, of flowers that bloom,
With fragrance pure and tender.

What miracle hath made me see,
That here on earth, remember,
Are poorly treasures, perishing,
While Heaven’s ones grow grander.

’Tis Heaven’s Love that showed the way,
That if I would be free,
I should, with Him, nail lowly things,
Upon the cruel, blessed Tree.

On Mortality (2012)

We but glance at our mortality, with illusions of immortality;
And so we number our greater days with lesser things.
And confuse greater people for lesser beings.

The Lady in the Sidelines (2015)

I saw her in the sideline today
Out of the corner of my eye

I had played for hours
Offence and defence
I scored and I missed
I played and she watched

She was a solitary figure
And she looked familiar
We had walked down the aisle once
But today, she stood in the sideline

For as long as I played, she spent the minutes of her life
The minutes had turn into hours, under the rays of the sun
The hours had turned into days, under the light of our covenant
And the days were months, and the months were years

And suddenly I paused in the middle of the game
When everyone was running around me
I found my deepest love
Standing in the sidelines of my life
