On Death & Dying
There is a deep, mysterious beauty in death.
Yet, in resisting it, we miss what’s possibly the most profound aspect of life itself.
And there are signs of this beauty.
The seed that falls to the ground and dies, transforms into a tree.
The last breath of a life well-lived, ushers in a spoken legacy that bears more immortal qualities, than the fleshly being that created it.
Living heroes are revered and celebrated, but only sacrificial heroes draw tears from the living.
The risk becomes the reward.
There are signs all around us – that teach us to embrace the profound beauty of death and dying. If only we look hard enough…
… then we would stop resisting. Perhaps then we’d truly start living.
Decided to write this today after reading about a young Melbournian father who died while rescuing another man’s child (yesterday); and about a young female fighter pilot who was prepared to fly right into United Airlines Flight 93 – to stop the hijacked plane headed for Washington on 9/11.
Perhaps the real lesson we need to learn in life… is how to die.
