Old? No. Advanced.
Words. Our entire framework for interpreting reality — is found in language.
And we — not others — choose the language that we use.
I bought the very first iPhone more than 10 years ago. I still have it. It’s old.
It has stopped supporting firmware updates. And does not operate the thousands of apps that have been built since then.
BUT — the iPhone Product Line itself, is not old. It’s incredibly advanced.
Apple has developed new technologies, better hardware, and established a software and media ecosystem that makes the iPhone one of the most advanced devices today.
So — the First iPhone is ‘old’.
But — the iPhone itself… is an incredibly advanced, rapidly growing ‘thing’.
So then, what are we?
Before this, I wrote two short posts about aging. And they seemed to have resonated with a number of friends.
I hear an increasing number of friends and colleagues label themselves as ‘old’ or ‘getting older’ — and these words sound jarring to me… because… what does that make me? Also ‘getting older’?
In the earlier years of my career, I worked really hard… slept late… ate junk food… forsaking health, body, mind, and spirit. You know that saying… “I was young and foolish then…”
I’ve since reversed that behavior — I sleep well, eat well, and breathe deeply. I am found surrounded by friends that I love and respect. I have a rich and full life with my wife and two children. I am more productive, competent, and more prepared for the future than I ever was.
I’ve advanced.
Many of my friends… those who do the same… have also — all become advanced. And that’s how I think of them.
The words ‘old’ or ‘older’ — are easier, more familiar, and more socially acceptable words to use. Not wrong.
But all they do… is conceal the truth.
